Dam Square is the heart of the city of Amsterdam. It’s well known for its frequent events and notable buildings like the Royal Palace, the ‘Nieuwe Kerk’ (New Church) and the National Monument statue. Watch the street artists and let the pigeons eat out of your hand or spend the day shopping in the Kalverstraat, the Bijenkorf and Magna Plaza. Take pictures with your favourite celebrities at Madame Tussauds, have a bite to eat at one of the many bars and restaurants or visit the Red Light District.
The A’dam Tower is located across the IJ, opposite from Central Station. The ferry will bring you across the IJ within a few minutes. Get to the top and enjoy a panoramic view of the city. Daredevils might even want to get the ‘Over the Edge’ experience: Europe’s highest swing will swing 100 meters above the ground, back and forth over the edge of the tower. After the adrenaline rush and taking in the stunning view, have a fancy dinner at Moon, a restaurant that revolves once an hour and guarantees a different perspective of the city with each course. Real party animals can keep the party going at Shelter, the underground nightclub.
The Rijksmusuem is located at Museum Square in the centre of Amsterdam. Dutch architect P.J.H. Cuypers designed the monumental building, which was constructed in 1876 and openened her doors in 1885. Explore more than 800 years of Dutch and global history in extraordinary and iconic pieces of art, including paintings by Van Gogh, Vermeer, Frans Hals and national treasures like Rembrandt’s ‘The Night Watch’. Expect to see more than just paintings though – sculptures, archeological artefacts, clothing, items from Dutch maritieme history and many more culturally significant objects are all part of the exhibitions.
